Stories We Tell is a research project questioning how literature can evolve from a physical book format to a reading experience in the context of post–digital publishing.

Literature preserves and expresses ideas as well as critical cultural shifts. But culture and society have been defined in history not only by the content of stories, but also by the forms in which they were shared. By applying a post–digital framework and challenging the standards of type design, this project invites the audience to reconsider the traditional format of fiction literature. In the form of a visual essay, Stories We Tell draws connections between creative writing and digital literacy, in pursuit to fuel discussion about the potential of variable type, dynamic text and performative storytelling within digital literature.

As part of the research project I designed a variable font called Stories. It challenges the manner in which type style should function. With the dynamic nature of the web and digital tools available, I questioned why digital type should be limited by the rules of mechanical typeset. And so, I designed type in motion – considering moment of transition as an inherent part of the typeface. The extreme instances of this font are to be seen as two different styles rather than a simple modification of the width or weight. With a move of a toggle the letters transform from contemporary and structured form into a dynamic and rule bending shape.
